Somewhere between "How did I not know that" and "I never would have guessed" are those discoveries we make that can be game-changers or mind-blowers. Once we discover these simple but impactful little things, we have to share. We share partly because we want everyone to know how incredible we found it and partly because we want to remember it ourselves. We've all experienced, marveled, or delighted in them. Today, I share my collection of such things amassed throughout many days and many circumstances with you.
Use a 1-cup measuring cup and fill it to 3/4. Squeeze the juice of 1/2 large lemon into the cup with water. Place this in the microwave on high power for 2 minutes. Carefully remove the hot cup and wipe the microwave clean without excessive scrubbing.
When we place those pre-prepped ingredients, especially fruit, in our storage containers, they seem to collect moisture and lose their freshness, get slimy, or fuzzy. It feels like a no-win. If I wait until the exact moment I need them, I probably won't have the time. If it's not the time then it is the energy or patience. Yet, if I pre-plan, prep, and prepare my efforts seem in vain as they don't last and I don't see the fruits of my labor, so to speak. Of course, I could spend money on the latest and greatest stay-fresh gadgets, but instead, I do this...
Place a paper plate (not a coated or heavy-duty disposable but a plain solid white paper plate) in the bottom of the dish before adding your food. It will absorb the moisture without dissolving into pieces.
Don't you hate it when you go to peel those perfectly boiled eggs only to make them look like the cellulite engulfed thighs of a 90-year-old woman? They don't peel smoothly, and they look terrible. Squeeze a lemon half into the boiling water and place that half into the water. I don't know why, but the eggs peel perfectly almost every time.
